Today’s first reading from the book of Jeremiah really shines light on understanding today’s gospel. The Israelites found themselves in a state of constant sin, terrorizing the temple, and completely ignoring the laws given to them by God. They were not holding up their end of the covenant.
“In those days, all the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people added infidelity to infidelity, practicing all the abominations of the nations and polluting the Lord’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem.” (2 Chronicles 36:14)
It is mind boggling the warning flags that are given to us in the Old Testament and yet we explicitly refuse to do anything about it. This statement above is exactly the reason why God had to send his son into the world, to relieve us of our sins. He didn’t come to condemn but to save.
Yet here we find ourselves again, in an age where people are ignoring the voice of God and his messengers, breaking his laws, and truly believe it is ok. Are we not God’s chosen people? His renewed Israel? Then let us take some time to truly look at their story and learn from it.
The difference now is Jesus has already defeated death, he sacrificed himself to save us from plunder. Let us ask for his merciful heart to shine it’s face upon those who need to turn away from the snares of sin.
We aren’t waiting for the Messiah, he is here and he wants to love you and bring you home.
