Today, we hear in my opinion one of the most powerful quotes in the entirety of Scripture. “Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them in reply, “What are you thinking in your hearts?” How amazing is it that we have a God who loves us so much, he sends his only son into the world, who knows our every thought? Think about how merciful Jesus can be towards us if he truly knows what we are thinking.
Sometimes we underestimate the healing power of Jesus. Look at the extent these men went through to have their friend saved. Now the urgency to be healed and have your sins forgiven in first century Palestine is that they associated suffering with sin. The more you sin, the more you suffer.
We know that suffering well is incredibly important to our faith journey. Advent is a great opportunity to make a good and holy confession and offer up the day to day pains of preparing for the holidays to a poor soul in purgatory, one suffering much greater than us.
