The genealogy is unique to Matthew’s Gospel. Matthew was writing to a predominantly Jewish audience so by including the names of key Old Testament figures, you would be able to draw the connection of who this new child is.
Jesus was very anticultural especially when it came to his inclusion and acceptance of women. Matthew using women in a Jewish genealogy was unheard of. This is significant because it foreshadows Jesus and who and what he stands for. The dignity of women was previously marginalized, they were in fact created equal.
Our Lady embodies the irreplaceable role of a woman and their role in salvation history. The ability to carry and bring a child into the world and the unshakeable faith which we see in the upper room following the Resurrection.
Let us pray for human dignity…
