We hear an extraordinary promise from God through the prophet Isaiah “My love shall never leave you nor my covenant of peace be shaken, says the LORD, who has mercy on you.” This line prefigures our Gospel reading regarding John the Baptist. God uses John to prepare the way for the fulfillment of his Covenant through Jesus. Jesus affirms the authority of John as the one who is preparing the way.
Sometimes we lose sight of God’s promise and love for us. Especially when we suffer or go through hard times. The Israelites waited 2,000 years for the promise to be fulfilled, we just have to go to Mass. Jesus left us the extraordinary gift of his continued presence in the Eucharist. A constant reminder that he never abandons us and his covenant will last until the end of time.
