Bishop Introduces Pastoral Administrator Ministry to the Diocese
Did you know that someone other than an ordained priest could be the actual leader of a parish? Actually, the Code of Canon Law back in 1983 offered the alternative of a deacon, vowed religious, lay person, or a group of the above, to be the parish leader when the Bishop determines that there is a shortage of ordained priests. This comes at a time of renewed appreciation for the collaborative nature of leadership in the church as well as the baptismal roots for ministry. Beginning several months ago, the Bishop began consulting with the diocesan pastoral council, presbyteral council, vicars forane, and others about the need to effectively staff all parishes. The number of clergy has declined by 206 in the last 20 years. In less than ten years, it is projected that we will have only about 100 active priests in the diocese to serve 150 parishes. This challenge needs to be addressed now.
Watch for more information.
